Tom Maddock on His Time at the Fraser Cup

Mar 31, 2025

Broadcaster Tom Maddock speaks on his experience at the Fraser Cup:

The chill of the ice rink was a familiar comfort as I settled into my broadcast position, the low hum of excitement filling the air. It was an honor to be on the road in St. Louis, Missouri with the NA3HL New Mexico Ice Wolves, a team brimming with talent and ambition, as they competed for the coveted Fraser Cup Championship. Broadcasting the games and traveling back and forth with the team on their bus provided me with a behind-the-scenes perspective that few ever get to experience.

Every day, I was thoroughly impressed by the professionalism and preparedness exhibited by the coaches and players. Head Coach Darren Banks, with his calm demeanor and strategic mind, guided the team with an unwavering focus, while Assistant Coach Alex Gilbert worked tirelessly to ensure every player was at their best. Their dedication was infectious, and it was evident that they were molding not just skilled athletes but a cohesive unit determined to succeed.

As the playoffs unfolded, the Ice Wolves faced the defending champions, the Helena Bighorns, in a thrilling matchup. Their grit and determination shone through as they knocked out the Bighorns, a feat that sent waves of pride through the team and its supporters. The semifinal match against their Southern Division rivals, the Louisiana Drillers, was electric, filled with the tension and excitement that only playoff hockey can bring.

While the Ice Wolves ultimately fell short of their ultimate goal of bringing home the Fraser Cup, they should hold their heads high. They displayed heart and resilience that transcended the scoreboard. Each player poured their soul into the game, and every moment spent on that bus, in the locker room, and on the ice was a testament to their journey.

I extend a special thanks to Coach Banks and Coach Gilbert for taking such great care of me during this incredible experience. Their generosity in sharing insights and allowing me to witness their world was invaluable. I am also grateful to team owner and CEO Stan Hubbard for this extraordinary opportunity. The memories made and the lessons learned on this journey with the Ice Wolves will forever hold a special place in my heart, a reminder of what it means to strive for greatness, no matter the outcome.
